What happened
On August 15, 2011, a Bombardier CRJ701 regional jet, operating as a passenger flight from Lyon, France, to Barcelona, France, experienced an engine failure during takeoff from Lyon Saint Exupery Airport (LYS). The crew of F-GRZH reported hearing two loud bangs during the takeoff roll. While there was no immediate change in engine parameters, a fire warning was triggered.
The flight crew performed an in-flight shutdown of the No. 1 (left) engine and discharged the fire extinguishing bottles to combat the fire. The aircraft performed a single-engine air turn back to LYS, where the crew completed a successful landing. There were no injuries to the passengers or crew.
