Accident Summary

On August 21, 2011, at 1140 Pacific daylight time, a Cirrus Design SR22, registration N675DH, sustained substantial damage following a runway overrun at Fall City Airport in Fall City, Washington. The private pilot and passenger were not injured. The airplane was registered to Daedelus Aviation LLC and operated under Part 91. The cross-country flight departed Snohomish County Airport (PAE) in Everett, Washington, about 1045, with a planned destination of Walla Walla, Washington. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and an instrument flight plan was filed.

Flight History

During climb to cruise at about 7,500 feet, the airplane began to lose airspeed and the low engine oil light illuminated. The pilot diverted to Fall City and initiated an approach to the runway. The first approach terminated with a go-around because the pilot reported his airspeed was too high. On the second approach, the pilot reported that the airspeed was correct, but he touched down near the midpoint of the 3,000-foot runway. He was unable to stop the airplane in the remaining distance, and it overran the runway, subsequently colliding with trees bordering the departure end. The pilot reported no engine power anomalies during the go-around or the second approach. Both wings sustained structural damage.

Aircraft and Pilot Information

The four-seat, low-wing, fixed-gear airplane was powered by a Continental IO-550 engine rated at 310 horsepower, equipped with an adjustable pitch propeller. The last annual inspection was completed September 10, 2010, at which time the airframe, engine, and propeller total time was approximately 950 hours. The pilot, age 72, held a private pilot certificate with single-engine land and instrument ratings. His most recent flight review was June 24, 2011. Post-Accident Examination

The engine was removed and shipped to Continental Motors Inc. for examination. The engine was intact with no impact-related damage. External surfaces were clean and undamaged, accessories were in place, and combustion deposits were noted in the combustion chambers and on piston heads. Oil was present on cylinder bores, and cylinder head combustion chambers, intake and exhaust valve faces, piston heads, and cylinder bores exhibited normal operating signatures. Top spark plugs showed no discrepancies. The engine was run in a test cell through stabilized power settings, accelerations, and decelerations, and performed to production test standards with no anomalies. A post-test examination revealed no anomalies or discrepancies.
