Engine Power Loss Leads to Forced Landing and Damage to Airplane

Incident Overview

A pilot reported that while flying at approximately 300 feet above ground level, the airplane experienced a total loss of engine power. The pilot attempted to restart the engine but was unsuccessful, and subsequently performed a forced landing into trees. The wings and fuselage sustained substantial damage.

Post-Accident Examination

A Federal Aviation Administration inspector examined the wreckage. The inspection revealed that the fuel tanks were intact and not breached, with about two gallons of fuel remaining in each tank. The airplane was equipped with two 19-gallon wing tanks, providing a total fuel capacity of 38 gallons, of which 35 gallons were usable. Examination of the engine showed no fuel present in the fuel lines or the fuel separator. The inspector found no preexisting mechanical anomalies that would have precluded normal operation of the airplane.
