A student pilot completing a solo cross-country flight struck a lamp post while taxiing after deciding not to refuel, causing substantial damage to the left wing.

Incident Overview

A student pilot, flying a flight school-owned airplane, had just completed a solo cross-country flight. After landing, he taxied the airplane toward the ramp with the intention of using the restroom and refueling. As he approached the fueling facility, he decided he did not have sufficient time to obtain fuel and still return the airplane within the allotted rental period. Consequently, he maneuvered the airplane to a parking area to perform a U-turn.

Collision Sequence

After completing the turn and while maneuvering the airplane back toward the taxi center line, the pilot caught sight of a lamp post to his left. He immediately applied brake and rudder control inputs, but the airplane skidded, and the left wing struck the lamp post. The impact caused substantial damage to the left aft wing spar.

Mechanical Condition

The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation.
