Accident Overview
The pilot was returning from a local area flight. Winds were calm, so a straight-in landing to the north was elected. During the descent, the airplane was higher than normal, prompting the pilot to extend the flaps to 40 degrees. The approach continued, and upon touchdown, the airplane bounced approximately 5 feet.
Go-Around and Wing Strike
Deciding to abort rather than continue bouncing, the pilot applied full power and retracted the flaps from 40 degrees directly to 0 degrees. Subsequently, the airplane's right wing rose, causing the left wing to impact the runway surface.
Procedural Reference
According to the Cessna Pilot’s Operating Handbook, during a balked landing, the flaps should be retracted to 20 degrees after full power is applied, and then retracted slowly once the airplane reaches 80 miles per hour.
Post-Accident Examination
A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector examined the airplane and found no preimpact mechanical malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation.
