Accident Details
The pilot stated that after advancing the throttle to about two-thirds, the parachute oscillated from left to right. Reducing the throttle stopped the oscillation and the parachute kitted up correctly. Increasing power allowed the aircraft to become airborne in a slow climb at approximately 30 mph.
While climbing, the pilot observed a tree line ahead. The aircraft was not achieving any lift, so the pilot maneuvered toward a cut in the trees. The nose of the airframe collided with the trees. The pilot added power to level the airframe, and the aircraft subsequently collided with the ground hard.
Injuries and Damage
Both the pilot and the passenger sustained serious injuries. The aircraft sustained minor damage.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported no pre-crash mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operations before the accident. The pilot stated he may have encountered a downdraft. The nearest airport to the crash site was located 15 miles to the northeast, where winds were reported as calm.
