Incident Overview

A pilot reported that while flying a helicopter in a canyon at an altitude of about 300 feet above ground level (AGL), he noticed a black bear. The pilot maneuvered the helicopter to get a closer look, descending to approximately 50 feet AGL before flying upslope. During this maneuver, the pilot allowed the helicopter's airspeed to drop below 20 knots, which was outside the helicopter's ability to hover.

Low Rotor RPM Warning and Settling
