Aero AT3 wing strike during landing attempt at EPML

Casualties unknown • EPML, PL

A student pilot's improper control inputs during a bounced landing caused an Aero AT3 to strike the runway with its left wingtip.

What happened

On June 2, 2013, an Aero AT3 was performing a landing attempt at the EPML aerodrome. During the approach, the student pilot experienced a bounced landing, causing the aircraft to rebound from the runway surface and gain a small amount of altitude.

In an attempt to soften the landing, the student pilot applied additional power while simultaneously applying left rudder and left aileron input. This sequence of actions caused the aircraft to bank heavily to the left. The instructor on board attempted to intervene by leveling the flight path and initiating a go-around procedure. However, the student pilot maintained excessive control inputs, preventing the instructor from effectively correcting the aircraft's attitude. Consequently, the left wingtip and aileron made contact with the runway surface.

The investigation

The PKBWL investigation focused on the control inputs applied by the student pilot during the bounce and the subsequent inability of the instructor to regain control of the aircraft's flight path.

Probable cause

The student pilot's incorrect response to a bounced landing, characterized by improper use of rudder and aileron, led to a wing strike that the instructor could not prevent.
