Incident Overview
On October 15, 2013, at approximately 1900 central daylight time, an Embraer EMB-500, registration N610AS, was substantially damaged when it exited the runway while landing at Colonel James Jabara Airport (KAAO) in Wichita, Kansas. The two pilots, both holding Airline Transport ratings, were uninjured. The aircraft was owned and operated by Executive Flight Services, Inc., doing business as Executive Airshare, under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a repositioning flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and the flight operated on an instrument flight rules flight plan. The flight had departed from Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport (KMKC) in Kansas City, Missouri, at 1816.
Pilot Experience and Landing Sequence
The pilot flying had recently completed training on the Embraer EMB-500 and indicated that the accident flight was his first actual flight in that aircraft type. The pilot-in-command decided to place him in the left seat and permitted him to perform the approach and landing. Before and during the flight, the pilots discussed braking procedures and techniques, emphasizing the need for even and firm brake application. The pilot flying described the landing as firm but not hard, and the initial portion of the landing rollout was reported as normal. However, a few seconds after applying full braking, the airplane began oscillating left and right, became uncontrollable, and departed the runway. Both pilots exited the aircraft after it came to a stop.
Flight Data Recorder Information
The aircraft was equipped with a flight data recorder (FDR). Analysis of the FDR data revealed that the messages "BRAKE FAIL" and "BRAKE RH CONTROL VALVE FAIL" were recorded 16 to 17 seconds after the landing transition. At the time these messages were logged, the wheel speeds were zero. The data showed no braking anomalies or maintenance codes while the airplane was in motion.

The airplane sustained substantial damage during the runway excursion. The accident occurred at Colonel James Jabara Airport (KAAO) in Wichita, Kansas. No other property damage or injuries were reported.
