Incident Overview
A pilot reported that shortly after takeoff, the helicopter hovered approximately two feet above ground before initiating a northwesterly takeoff run over grass-covered, uneven terrain. During the takeoff run, the main rotor RPM began to decay. The pilot added engine throttle to correct the RPM decline, but the helicopter subsequently descended.
Sequence of Events
Upon touchdown, the left main landing gear skid collapsed. The helicopter rolled to the left, and the main rotor blades struck the ground. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the main rotor drive system, tail boom, and fuselage.
Operational Parameters
The pilot estimated the helicopter's gross weight at takeoff as 2,300 pounds, approximately 50 pounds below the maximum gross weight of 2,350 pounds. The density altitude was calculated to be 7,015 feet mean sea level.
Mechanical Condition
The pilot reported no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation.
