Incident Overview
A pilot flying a tailwheel-equipped airplane experienced reduced engine power during takeoff, prompting a precautionary landing at a nearby airport with a longer runway. After what was described as an uneventful landing, the pilot shifted attention to the engine instruments. The airplane then swerved to the right, causing the right main landing gear to fold underneath the fuselage. The right wing subsequently struck the ground.
Postaccident Findings
Following the occurrence, the pilot examined the airplane and discovered that the right wing spar was bent. Additionally, an insulating cover was found over the carburetor air intake. The pilot attributed the earlier loss of engine power to this cover.
Pilot Actions
Prior to the flight, the pilot had removed an insulating blanket and heat source from the airplane and conducted a preflight inspection. The engine run up was normal, but during takeoff the airplane seemed sluggish and the rate of climb did not feel normal. Concluding that the engine was not producing full power, the pilot decided to land at an alternate airport with a larger runway.
