Incident Overview
On May 13, 2014, at approximately 1430 mountain daylight time, a Cessna 180A (registration N5281D) experienced a ground loop during landing at Nampa Municipal Airport (MAN) in Nampa, Idaho. The airplane was substantially damaged when the left wing struck the ground, and the landing gear collapsed. The private pilot and one passenger were not injured.
Flight Details
The flight was conducted under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed. The airplane had departed from MAN at about 1415. The pilot reported an uneventful approach to the runway.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that he executed a tail-low, three-point landing with the tailwheel-equipped airplane. Approximately 30 feet into the landing roll, the airplane turned sharply to the right and entered a ground loop. Subsequently, the landing gear collapsed, and the left wing impacted the ground.
Postaccident Examination
A Federal Aviation Administration inspector examined the tailwheel after the accident. The tailwheel was found to be heavily worn; however, it castered freely, and no anomalies were noted.
