Incident Details
A pilot reported to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector that he had flown a multi-leg trip from Columbus Municipal Airport (KOLU) in Columbus, Nebraska, to Stuart-Atkinson Municipal Airport (8V2) in Atkinson, Nebraska, then to Rock County Airport (KRBE) in Bassett, Nebraska, and finally to Springview Municipal Airport (9V1) in Springview, Nebraska. Upon arrival at Springview, the pilot landed on runway 31, a turf strip measuring 2,200 feet by 200 feet. Winds were from 260 degrees at 11 knots, gusting to 16 knots. The pilot described the landing as "not good." The airplane subsequently ground looped to the right and nosed over, resulting in damage to both wing tips, a buckled left wing lift strut, and a wrinkled left main landing gear attach point. While extricating himself from the airplane, the pilot fractured his ankle.
Airport Status
According to the FAA inspector, the Nebraska State Department of Aeronautics confirmed that Springview Municipal Airport (9V1) was no longer a state-recognized airport. The airport is not identified on current aeronautical sectional charts or in airport directories. Approximately 7 to 8 years prior, the airport's owners did not renew the state license, and the airport had not passed a state inspection. However, the pilot reported that he leases the airport from the Village of Springview for one dollar per year and maintains the grass strip himself.
