A pilot executed a go-around after a wind shift on short final, but the airplane stalled and descended, striking the ground and sustaining substantial damage to the fuselage and right wing.

Accident Narrative

The pilot obtained the airport's weather information prior to landing, which indicated wind from 250 degrees at 9 knots gusting to 20 knots. Recognizing that landing would involve a 90-degree crosswind on either runway, the pilot elected to land on runway 34. During short final, the pilot noticed a wind shift to a direct tailwind and immediately initiated a go-around. The pilot established a climb at 500 feet per minute and an airspeed of 120 knots. When the airplane reached about 200 feet above ground level, it began to descend and the airspeed decreased. The pilot attempted to arrest the descent by lowering the airplane's nose to gain airspeed, but the airplane stalled and rolled left. The pilot leveled the wings, and the airplane impacted the ground in a level attitude.

Damage

Substantial damage occurred to the airplane's fuselage and right wing.
