During takeoff with calm wind, an agricultural airplane failed to gain sufficient speed. The pilot added throttle and attempted to dump the load, but the dump-stop mechanism prevented jettisoning. The aircraft lifted off at runway's end, struck a ridge with its tailwheel, cleared a ditch, and impacted young trees before landing in a field.

Accident Description

A pilot reported that during the takeoff roll in calm wind conditions, the airplane did not accelerate enough to lift off. The pilot added throttle and attempted to jettison the load, but the dump-stop mechanism prevented the load from being released. As the aircraft reached the end of the runway, it lifted off. Shortly after, the tailwheel struck a small ridge, causing the airplane to decelerate. The aircraft then cleared a ditch and began impacting young trees. With large trees directly ahead, the pilot reduced power and landed in a field of young trees.

Damage

The upper and lower wing panels sustained substantial damage.

The pilot stated that the accident could have been prevented if the dump-stop had been flipped over prior to takeoff, which would have allowed the load to be dumped faster. Additionally, the pilot noted that because the temperature had increased from earlier in the morning, he should have reduced his chemical load.
