What happened
On May 29, 2014, a Cessna C 560 XL was involved in a ground incident at EPKK. After taxiing onto runway 25, the crew reported difficulties with the aircraft's braking system. Following the report, the aircraft taxied off the runway and proceeded to the parking stand. After performing brake tests, the decision was made to return the aircraft to Warsaw.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the mechanical failure of the braking components. Investigators examined the brake assembly to determine why the braking performance was compromised during taxiing. The inquiry established that the issue originated from a mechanical looseness within the brake mechanism.
Findings
- The primary cause of the brake seizure was excessive clearance between the brake pressure plates.
- This excessive clearance was caused by a loosened brake wear indicator, which resulted from damage to the pressure plate itself.
