What happened
On July 10, 2014, following the completion of a flight, a PZL-110 Koliber was taxiing toward a hangar at Rzeszów Airport (EPRJ). During this taxi phase, the crew noticed the smell of burning and observed smoke emanating from beneath the engine cowling. In response to the situation, the crew immediately shut down the engine and had the aircraft towed to a hangar for inspection.
The investigation
An investigation into the incident revealed an engine oil leak originating from a damaged oil line that carries oil from the engine to the radiator. The investigation established that the line had been chafed at the point where it contacts the engine cowling. This damage was caused by the loosening of a securing clamp that was intended to hold the line in place.
Due to the departure of the technical personnel involved in the initial response, the investigation was conducted based on the report provided by the regional aero club. The investigation noted that it could not be definitively confirmed whether pre-flight inspections had been performed with the necessary level of diligence.
