Incident
On November 20, 2014, about 2000 central standard time, two Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 aircraft were involved in a ground collision at an airport. The aircraft involved were Southwest Airlines flight 8751, a Boeing 737-700, registration N263WN, and Southwest Airlines flight 301, a Boeing 737-800, registration N8314L.
Flight Operations
N263WN was conducting a functional check flight under 14 CFR Part 91 and had two flight crew members onboard. N8314L was operating as a scheduled domestic passenger flight under 14 CFR Part 121, carrying 177 passengers and crew members. No injuries were reported among the occupants of either airplane.
Sequence of Events
According to flight crew statements, N8314L had landed on runway 13L and was holding on taxi lane P with its parking brakes set, waiting for gate 14 to become available. N263WN pushed back from gate 3 and was cleared to taxi to runway 13L via taxiway B. As N263WN approached taxi lane P, the first officer said "watch the 800." The captain then steered the airplane to the right of the centerline of taxiway B, believing that his wingtip was clear of the left-hand horizontal stabilizer of N8314L. He then shifted his attention back to the taxi path to avoid overcorrecting to the right. However, the left wingtip of N263WN struck the right-hand horizontal stabilizer of the parked N8314L.
Damage
N263WN sustained minor damage to its left wingtip, while N8314L's right-hand horizontal stabilizer was substantially damaged.
