Flight Deviation Incident in Poznań TMA

Casualties unknown • TMA EPPO, PL

A Beech 400 Beechjet pilot was instructed to limit their climb altitude after failing to coordinate entry into controlled airspace.

What happened

On October 9, 2014, a Beech 400 Beechjet departed from the uncontrolled airfield in Piła (EPPI). After takeoff, the pilot established radio contact with air traffic control while climbing toward FL195, intending to navigate toward the CHO waypoint. Because the flight had not been previously coordinated for entry into the controlled airspace, and due to the presence of other air traffic, air traffic controllers instructed the pilot to terminate the climb at FL120.

The investigation

The PKBWL investigation focused on the lack of prior coordination regarding the aircraft's entry into the Poznań TMA. During the course of the investigation, the commission was unable to identify the pilot of the aircraft despite various attempts.

Findings

  • The primary cause of the incident was the pilot's failure to coordinate and obtain the necessary clearance from the appropriate air traffic control services prior to entering the Poznań TMA.

Probable cause

The incident was caused by the pilot's failure to properly coordinate their flight plan and secure authorization from air traffic services before entering controlled airspace.
