Incident Overview
A pilot of a special light sport weight-shift aircraft reported that he was attempting to land at a private airstrip to attend a breakfast fly-in. During the approach, he performed two go-arounds because of other traffic in the airport traffic pattern. On the third approach to runway 9, the pilot extended his glidepath to accommodate another aircraft that was back-taxiing on the 3,415-foot-long turf runway, intending to land further down the runway.
Sequence of Events
As the pilot extended his glidepath, the airspeed decreased. When the aircraft was approximately 15 feet above the runway, a wind shift occurred, causing the aircraft to stall and impact the runway. The aircraft subsequently came to rest inverted on the runway.
Aircraft Damage and Examination
An examination of the wreckage by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector revealed substantial damage to both wings. The inspector did not observe any preimpact mechanical malfunctions, and the pilot did not report any such issues.
Weather Conditions
The pilot reported that the wind was variable at 9 knots, gusting to 12 knots. Recorded wind information at an airport located about 17 miles from the accident site indicated similar conditions, with variable wind from 020 to 090 degrees at 8 knots.
