The pilot entered a high right base leg for runway 10 due to traffic, remained high during approach, and attempted to land on the last half of the runway with only 10 degrees of flaps. The airplane touched down near the end, overran into grass, and struck a fence.

Accident Overview

The pilot of a single-engine airplane reported that while approaching an airport with a 3,199-foot-long asphalt runway, he purposely entered a high right base leg for runway 10 to avoid other traffic ahead in the traffic pattern. During the approach, the airplane remained high, and the pilot attempted to land on the last one-half of the runway. However, the airplane was also too fast because the pilot had selected only 10 degrees of flap extension.

Landing and Excursion

The airplane touched down near the end of the runway, then traveled over an approximate 500-foot grass area beyond the runway's end. It subsequently struck a fence before coming to rest upright.

Post-Accident Examination

A Federal Aviation Administration inspector examined the airplane and noted substantial damage to the firewall. The inspector did not observe any preimpact mechanical malfunctions with the airplane, nor did the pilot report any. The recorded wind near the accident site, around the time of the accident, was from 040 degrees at 7 knots.
