Introduction
The pilot of an experimental airplane was conducting his first flight in the aircraft. He planned a fuel stop during a long cross-country flight based on an estimated fuel consumption rate of 12 gallons per hour. The pilot later stated that his estimate did not account for the engine upgrade from carbureted to fuel injected.
Flight Events
During the first leg of the cross-country flight, the airplane was on approach to the intended fuel-stop airport. As the pilot flared, the airplane ballooned, prompting a go-around. Approximately 500 feet above ground level during the go-around, the engine lost all power. The pilot executed a forced landing to an open field. During the landing, the airplane struck an unoccupied house and came to rest on its right side.
Post-Accident Examination
A Federal Aviation Administration inspector examined the wreckage. The inspector found that the airplane's single fuel tank was not compromised but was devoid of fuel. No preimpact mechanical malfunctions were discovered, and the pilot did not report any. The right wing and fuselage sustained substantial damage.
