What happened
On August 2, 2015, a student paraglider was participating in ground training exercises in Łęki Kościelne. The student, who was undergoing a course to obtain a qualification certificate, had recently completed several days of practical ground instruction and three winch-assisted flights.
During the session, which focused on improving takeoff techniques and canopy control, the weather conditions were favorable, with a southeast wind at a speed of 3-4 m/s. While performing maneuvers to deflate the wing, the student tripped and lost their balance. As the student fell, they instinctively braced themselves by placing their right hand on the ground.
The investigation
The investigation established that the incident occurred during routine ground handling maneuvers. Following the fall, the student was transported to a hospital where medical professionals confirmed a fracture of the right wrist near the carpal region. The training entity subsequently reviewed the incident with all participants involved in the training.
Findings
- The primary cause of the injury was the student tripping and losing balance while performing ground exercises, leading to a fall where the student supported their weight with their right arm.
