Student Skydiver Sustains Serious Injuries During Landing in Krosno

Casualties unknown • Krosno (EPKR), PL

A student skydiver suffered serious injuries after performing an incorrect landing maneuver during a training jump at Krosno airport.

What happened

On August 23, 2015, a student skydiver participating in a training session organized by Grupa Spadochronowa Reaktor 24 was involved in an accident at the Krosno airport (EPKR). The individual was performing their second-ever jump, executing the SL-1 task using a Voyager 260 parachute.

The student successfully exited the aircraft at an altitude of 1,000 meters and followed radio instructions from the instructor to navigate toward the landing zone. As the student approached the landing area at an altitude of approximately 100 meters, they were flying into a headwind of 2-3 m/s. Upon reaching an altitude of about 5 meters, the student received instructions to flare the parachute. In response, the student pulled the control lines too aggressively, causing the parachute to descend at an increased rate. At approximately 2 meters above the ground, the student lifted both legs, landing on their buttocks. This impact resulted in serious injuries.

The investigation

The investigation focused on the sequence of maneuvers performed during the final approach and the physical actions taken by the student immediately prior to ground contact.

Probable cause

The primary cause of the accident was the adoption of an incorrect body position and improper control input during the landing flare.
