What happened
On January 30, 2016, an MS 893 was performing aero-tow operations at the Świebodzice landing field (EPWC). During the period of operation, weather conditions were notably difficult, characterized by winds from 220-240° at speeds of 10–12 m/s, with gusts reaching up to 18 m/s.
Following the successful release of a glider, the aircraft landed normally on runway 25 at 12:32 LMT. After completing the landing roll, the pilot attempted to taxi toward the next glider. While executing a left turn using the leeward wheel brake and increased engine power, the left landing gear strut experienced significant deflection. This movement caused the windward tail and wing to lift, resulting in the aircraft tilting toward the engine. Consequently, the propeller made contact with the grassy surface of runway 25 at a depth of approximately 5–10 cm.
The investigation
The investigation, conducted by the operator, examined the aircraft's movement during the turn and the environmental conditions present at the time of the incident. The inspection of the aircraft following the event revealed minor damage to the tip of one propeller blade and minor disturbance to the grass surface of the runway.
Findings
- The aircraft was being operated in atmospheric conditions exceeding the limits specified in the aircraft's operating instructions.
- The pilot performed an improper turn during taxiing while operating in very high wind speeds.
