Introduction
A student pilot was performing routine flight maneuvers as part of his training. The flight proceeded normally until the landing phase, when a crosswind gust resulted in a hard touchdown.
Flight Details
According to the student pilot, after completing his maneuver practice, he made a normal approach to runway 28. During the landing flare, a crosswind gust caused the airplane to float, leading to a hard landing. Dissatisfied with this landing, the pilot decided to take off again and remain in the traffic pattern. On his subsequent landing, he used full flaps and a higher airspeed, achieving what he described as a controlled, smoother touchdown.
Aftermath
The student pilot reported no mechanical failures or anomalies during the flight that would have prevented normal operations. Three days later, when he arrived for his next flight, he was informed that the airplane had sustained substantial damage to the firewall.
Weather Conditions
A meteorological aerodrome report for the accident airport at the time of the incident indicated wind from 270 degrees true at 9 knots, gusting to 19 knots.
Findings
No mechanical or system anomalies were reported. The hard landing was attributed to a crosswind gust during the flare.
