Incident Overview
A pilot reported that during the takeoff roll at about 30 knots indicated airspeed, his seat slid back a few inches. He described the initial movement as inconvenient and noted that if he had taken no action, the situation would likely have remained manageable.
Pilot Actions and Outcome
According to the pilot, his reaction to move the seat forward using the adjustment bar during the acceleration caused the seat to move to the full aft position. This full aft movement led him to inadvertently pull back on the yoke, causing the nose landing gear to lift off the ground. Subsequently, the airplane veered left, exited the runway to the left, and struck a fence before coming to a halt.
Aircraft Damage
The airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings, the horizontal stabilizer, and the elevator.
Mechanical Examination
The pilot reported no mechanical malfunctions or anomalies with the airplane during the takeoff roll that would have prevented normal flight operations. A Federal Aviation Administration Aviation Safety Inspector examined the pilot's seat, track, and adjustment assembly and found no failures or anomalies.
Relevant Procedures
According to the manufacturer's Pilot Operating Handbook, item number three of the Before Start Checklist states: "Seats/Belts – Adjusted and locked."
