Overview
On October 11, 2016, at approximately 1530 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-34-200 twin-engine airplane, registered as N15294, was destroyed when it struck the ground near Hartford-Brainard Airport (HFD) in Hartford, Connecticut. The aircraft was operated by American Flight Academy on a 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 instructional flight. The flight instructor sustained serious injuries, and the private pilot received fatal injuries.

The airplane was registered to International Aviation, LLC. It departed Hartford-Brainard Airport about one hour before the accident for a local flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the airport at the time of the accident, and no flight plan had been filed.
Investigation
The investigation is being conducted under the jurisdiction of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) provided requested technical assistance to the FBI. Any material generated by the NTSB is under the control of the FBI. The NTSB does not plan to issue a report or open a public docket.
