Taxiway Incursion at Rzeszów-Jasionka During Airshow

Casualties unknown • AD EPRZ, PL

A PZL-104 Wilga aircraft involved in a group flight display entered an occupied taxiway at Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport, failing to follow air traffic control instructions.

What happened

On June 25, 2016, during the II Podkarpackie Airshow at Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport (AD EPRZ), a group of aircraft from Aeroklub Rzeszowski was scheduled to perform flight displays. The group, consisting of two PZL-110 Koliber aircraft and one PZL-104 Wilga, registration SP-AGX, was acting as the lead element.

During the event, the Air Traffic Controller (TWR Rzeszów) observed that SP-AGX had crossed the holding point lines for runway 09 and stopped at the runway edge. To avoid delaying the ongoing Firebirds aerobatic group's landing, the controller authorized the Aeroklub Rzeszowski group to depart first, flying through the SE zone toward the SW zone to wait for their display slot.

After completing their flight display, the pilot of SP-AGX failed to follow instructions to vacate the runway via taxiway A. Instead, the pilot taxied onto taxiway D1, which was already occupied by another aircraft preparing for departure. The pilot continued taxiing despite interventions from the air traffic controller and only turned around upon visually spotting the other aircraft on the taxiway.

The investigation

The investigation focused on the pilot's actions following the completion of the flight display and the interaction with air traffic control. The inquiry examined the sequence of taxiing instructions provided by the controller and the pilot's compliance with airport maneuvering area procedures during the airshow operations.
