A float-equipped airplane aborted takeoff on a waterway after the pilot determined the takeoff run was insufficient. The aircraft slid onto a grass embankment and came to rest on a taxiway, sustaining substantial fuselage damage.

Incident Overview

A pilot of a float-equipped airplane reported that during a takeoff on a waterway, the airplane initially accelerated as expected. However, the pilot noted that "it became clear that the take-off run was not progressing as anticipated" and decided to abort the takeoff. The pilot reduced power to idle and applied back pressure to the control yoke. The airplane subsequently slid onto a grass embankment at the end of the runway and came to rest on an adjacent taxiway.

Aircraft Damage

The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage as a result of the incident.

Mechanical Condition

The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Weather Conditions

Prior to takeoff, the pilot observed that the windsock showed "no significant wind," and the control tower confirmed a southerly traffic pattern was in use. The pilot departed waterway 17W. Weather observations taken at the airport indicated that from about 20 minutes before the accident to 60 minutes after, the wind varied in direction from 360° to 050°, with speeds ranging from 4 to 11 knots. A peak wind of 360° at 30 knots was recorded.

Sequence of Events

The pilot initiated the takeoff on the waterway. After the airplane failed to accelerate as anticipated, the pilot aborted the takeoff. The airplane transitioned from the water onto the grass embankment and came to a stop on the taxiway.
