A glider tow pilot reported low fuel indication during flight, then engine power loss, and attempted landing in a pasture. The aircraft struck trees and sustained substantial damage.

Preflight and Fuel Check

The pilot reported that during preflight, the fuel indicator showed "2/3 full." He had a brief discussion with the previous pilot, who had just completed numerous glider tow flights without refueling. A fuel dipstick was not available, and a visual check of the fuel quantity was not completed during preflight.

In-Flight Event

On the 10th glider tow flight, approximately 2 hours into flight time, the pilot noted a low fuel indication just prior to glider release. After the glider released, during the return to the airport, about 2 nautical miles from the runway at an altitude of about 1,900 feet above ground, the engine lost power.

Forced Landing

The pilot reported that due to a quartering headwind aloft, he did not believe he could reach the runway. He attempted to land on an open pasture but struck trees and impacted terrain about 50 yards short of the pasture.

Aircraft Damage

The fuselage, elevator, and both wings sustained substantial damage. The pilot reported no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation.
