Accident Summary

On August 20, 2017, at approximately 1300 central daylight time, a Cessna 182R airplane, registration N182DW, was substantially damaged after it departed the runway while landing at Jesse Viertel Memorial Airport (KVER) in Booneville, Missouri. The private pilot and passenger were not injured. The flight was conducted under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal cross-country trip. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) flight plan had been filed. The flight had departed from Clinton Regional Airport (KCLK) in Clinton, Oklahoma, around 1045 and was destined for KVER.

Pilot Account

According to the pilot, during the landing on runway 18, which is 4,000 feet long and 75 feet wide and composed of asphalt, the left brake locked. This caused the airplane to veer off the runway and enter a ravine. The horizontal stabilizer and fuselage sustained substantial damage.

Inspector Findings

An FAA inspector who responded to the scene observed rubber witness marks from both the left and right tires in a left-turning arc that continued to the runway edge. The left tire did not exhibit flat spots consistent with a locked brake condition. The master cylinder was full of hydraulic fluid, and no evidence of a fluid leak was found. The brake caliper, brake pads, and left brake disc were all in good condition. The inspector was unable to duplicate the locked brake condition. An examination of the airframe and flight controls revealed no anomalies that would have caused a loss of directional control during the landing roll.
