Accident Description
On November 22, 2017, at approximately 1200 central standard time, a Cessna 172N airplane, registered as N734VH to a private individual, sustained substantial damage following a landing gear collapse and subsequent runway excursion at Maple Lake Municipal Airport (MGG) in Maple Lake, Minnesota. The pilot and two passengers were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time, and no flight plan was filed. The flight was conducted under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91.
Flight Details
The flight originated at 1100 from the Cumberland Municipal Airport (UMB) in Cumberland, Wisconsin. The pilot initially reported that during landing on runway 28, he experienced a "rough landing," after which the "right rear strut wheel broke," and the airplane skidded into a hangar.
Examination Findings
An examination of the accident site and aircraft by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector revealed that the airplane touched down on runway 28 and then slid onto the grass infield approximately 1,000 feet beyond the touchdown point. The aircraft subsequently crossed over a taxiway, impacted a rock drainage revetment, and then collided with a hangar. The total distance traveled by the airplane from touchdown to impact with the hangar was about 2,100 feet. Skid marks on the runway and grass correlated with the airplane's path during the excursion. Evidence at the site indicated that the landing gear strut separated from the airplane approximately 100 feet before impact with the hangar. Examination of the wreckage did not reveal any pre-impact anomalies. The pilot did not provide any additional information or complete an NTSB Form 6120.
