What happened
On September 13, 2017, a flight instructor and a student pilot were conducting a training flight in a TECNAM P2002-JF. The flight was intended to practice emergency procedures, specifically a simulated engine failure following takeoff. The crew flew to the Jaryszewo grass landing strip, located approximately 20NM from Poznań-Ławica airport.
During the execution of a 180-degree turn at an altitude of 500ft AGL to simulate the engine failure, the aircraft entered a stall. During the final approach to the landing strip at approximately 10:25 LMT, the aircraft experienced a hard landing. The impact caused the nose gear to collapse, resulting in propeller damage and damage to the lower engine cowling.
The investigation
The investigation was conducted by the operator. Following the incident, the instructor notified the appropriate authorities, including the police, who performed sobriety tests on both crew members, which returned results of 0.00 promille. The investigation established that meteorological conditions were not a contributing factor to the event.
Findings
- The primary cause of the incident was pilot error, specifically a mistake in flight technique that allowed the aircraft to stall during the final approach phase of the simulated engine failure maneuver.
- A tailwind during the final stage of the approach acted as a contributing factor to the occurrence.
