What happened
On 16 July 2018, a single-engine Enstrom 280FX helicopter, registration N531TJ, was involved in an accident at Carrahane Strand, Co. Kerry. The pilot was conducting general aviation practice exercises, including maneuvers such as hover-taxi and spot turns, in a tidal lagoon.
Seeking a break from the exercises, the pilot attempted to land on a surface consisting of soft, wet sand. As the aircraft was touching down and still light on its skids, the pilot was momentarily distracted by a ringing mobile phone mounted on the instrument panel. During this brief distraction, a gust of wind from the west struck the right side of the aircraft. This caused the helicopter to roll onto its left-hand side, resulting in substantial damage to the rotor blades, rotor head, mast, gearbox, and stabilizers. The pilot, who was the sole occupant, escaped the aircraft without injury.
The investigation
AAIU inspectors examined the accident site and the recovered aircraft. Despite the site being subject to tidal flows, investigators identified clear witness marks indicating the helicopter had pivoted around the left skid. The investigation also reviewed the pilot's experience and the meteorological conditions, which included a 12-15 knot wind from the west.
Findings
- The aircraft's left skid became embedded in the soft, wet sand, creating a pivot point.
- A momentary distraction caused by a mobile phone notification occurred during a critical phase of flight.
- A wind gust from the right side of the aircraft initiated a dynamic rollover.
- The aircraft sustained significant structural damage, including damage to the main rotor components and likely shock loading to the engine.
