Engine Power Loss
During a visual approach at an altitude of 700 feet, the pilot of an airplane experienced a total loss of engine power. The pilot immediately recognized that the selected fuel tank was empty, having forgotten to switch fuel tanks earlier in the flight. She then selected the other fuel tank, which contained fuel, and activated the auxiliary fuel pump. This action restored partial engine power.
Forced Landing Attempt
With partial power available, the pilot decided to land at a nearby private airstrip. During the approach to this airstrip, the airplane's right wing struck a tree, resulting in substantial damage to the wing. Despite the impact, the pilot continued the landing.
Landing Roll and Nose Gear Collapse
During the landing roll, the nose wheel contacted soft gravel, causing the nose gear to collapse. The airplane then impacted the terrain, resulting in substantial damage to the fuselage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
