Skydiver injured during landing in Łososina Dolna

Casualties unknown • Łososina Dolna (EPNL), PL

A student skydiver sustained a leg injury after landing with incorrect body positioning during a training jump in Poland.

What happened

On May 12, 2018, a student skydiver was performing their tenth jump of the season from an AN-2 aircraft. The jump took place at an altitude of 2,000 meters near Łososina Dolna. Due to a seasonal hiatus in jumping activities, the student had recently undergone refresher training.

The descent and the execution of the landing pattern were performed correctly, and the student successfully separated from the aircraft. However, during the final approach, the skydiver landed with their legs spread apart rather than together. This impact resulted in a right leg injury.

At the time of the incident, surface wind speeds were approximately 2 m/s. Following the landing, first aid was administered on-site, and the individual was transported to an emergency department. Medical examinations confirmed a fracture of the lateral malleolus of the right lower leg with subluxation of the ankle joint.

The investigation

The PKBWL investigation focused on the sequence of the landing maneuver and the student's physical positioning during the final moments of the descent. The investigation established that the flight parameters and the separation from the aircraft were within normal operational limits.

Probable cause

The injury was caused by the skydiver adopting an incorrect landing position, specifically failing to land with legs together.
