What happened
On July 21, 2018, at approximately 16:46 LMT, a paraglider pilot was conducting a recreational flight near Stary Kraszew, Mazowieckie Voivodeship. While flying over a meadow at an altitude of approximately 10 meters, the pilot fell to the ground.
A witness, the owner of the meadow, observed the incident and approached the pilot, who was conscious but complaining of back pain. Emergency services, including the fire department and an ambulance, responded to the scene. Due to the nature of the injuries, the pilot was transported to a hospital in Warsaw via medical helicopter.
The investigation
The PKBWL investigation included a review of police operational materials, medical documentation, and alcohol testing results. The commission also examined statements from the witness and the pilot. The investigation confirmed that the pilot held the necessary qualifications for paragliding and that the Dudek paraglider was in airworthy condition. Testing confirmed the pilot was not under the influence of alcohol, and meteorological conditions were favorable (VMC) and did not contribute to the accident.
Findings
- The pilot had very limited practical experience, having received his qualification certificate only 17 days prior to the accident.
- The weather conditions were good and did not play a role in the occurrence.
- The equipment was functional and no third-party involvement was identified.
