Accident Overview
On June 18, 2019, at approximately 0847 eastern daylight time, a Flightstar FC-II, registration N354AR, was destroyed in an accident near Knoxville, Tennessee. The pilot, who sustained minor injuries, was operating the aircraft under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight.
Event Sequence
While conducting a flight near Sky Ranch Airport (TN98), Knoxville, Tennessee, the engine ceased operation. The pilot subsequently landed the airplane in the Tennessee River, exited the aircraft, and swam to shore. Following the accident, the pilot informed a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector that he had executed the water landing due to electrical and engine problems.
Post-Accident Examination
An FAA inspector examined the airplane after its recovery and reported that the aircraft had been submerged in turbulent water for more than 24 hours. The airplane was mostly destroyed either by the water impact or damage incurred during recovery. The fuel system was entirely contaminated by water, and it was not possible to determine whether fuel was present at the time of the accident. Examination of the electrical system could not be performed because of the water damage. Apart from the severe impact and recovery damage, no obvious mechanical anomalies were observed with the airframe or engine.
