Incident Overview
A Piper airplane and a Cessna airplane were involved in a ground collision while taxiing at an unspecified airport. The pilot of the Piper stated that after landing, as he was taxiing back to his parking spot, he observed a Cessna holding short at a taxiway intersection. Believing the Cessna was stationary, he continued taxiing. He then felt a "strong impact" as his airplane passed the Cessna.
Cessna Instructor's Account
The flight instructor in the Cessna reported that he was conducting a familiarization flight with a passenger. After clearing the taxiway from the ramp, he positioned the Cessna at the taxiway intersection. He saw the Piper taxi past and assessed that there was adequate clearance. He then maneuvered the Cessna, turning left onto the taxiway. While simultaneously instructing the passenger, the Cessna's left-wing tip struck the Piper's engine and left aileron. The instructor acknowledged that he should have waited for the Piper to pass completely and should have spent more time briefing the passenger to reduce task saturation.
Damage Assessment
The Piper sustained substantial damage to its left aileron. The Cessna received minor damage to its lower engine cowling and propeller.
Mechanical Status
Both pilots reported that there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions with their respective airplanes or engines that would have precluded normal operation.
