Flight and Landing Attempt
A private pilot, accompanied by one passenger, was conducting a cross-country flight. According to the pilot, the Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) at the destination airport reported calm winds. However, the pilot decided to perform a conventional, full-stall, three-point landing. The pilot crossed midfield and entered a left downwind leg for runway 30, with turns to base and final described as normal.
Unexpected Wind Gust
As the airplane descended to about one foot above the runway at stall speed, an unexpected wind gust pushed the aircraft to the left. The left main landing gear made contact with the runway surface. Subsequently, the airplane drifted to the right, and the left shock absorber fractured. The aircraft then veered to the right, and the tailwheel unlocked, allowing the tailwheel to swivel. The airplane ground looped.
Damage and Pilot Observations
Damage resulting from the ground loop included a bent left wing and bent left main landing gear. The pilot did not report any mechanical issues with the airplane prior to the accident. The pilot noted that the destination airport "has a reputation for gusty wind conditions" and stated that "the gust caught me in a landing configuration where I was unable to maintain directional control at touchdown." The pilot also explained that once the tailwheel turns about 15 to 20 degrees, it unlocks automatically and swivels, leaving no tailwheel steering.
