What happened
On April 7, 2019, a qualified paraglider pilot arrived at the Borsk landing field for the purpose of conducting several recreational flights. After performing standard pre-flight checks—including verifying the wing layout, line condition, and harness security—the pilot attached the winch cable and signaled readiness for takeoff.
The initial phase of the winch launch proceeded normally. However, once the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 5 to 7 meters, the paraglider began to veer sharply to the left. The pilot attempted to correct the direction using the right brake, but found that the right brake line was entangled with the harness carabiner, preventing any corrective maneuvering.
Recognizing the loss of control, the launch supervisor issued three consecutive "stop" commands via radio, successfully terminating the winch tow. Following the interruption, the pilot fell from the 5-meter altitude to the ground. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and the pilot was transported by medical helicopter to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
The investigation
The PKBWL investigation focused on the mechanics of the launch and the equipment configuration at the time of the incident. The investigation established that the weather conditions were favorable (VMC) and did not contribute to the accident. The investigation also noted that the paraglider and harness were removed from the site by an acquaintance of the pilot prior to the arrival of the police.
