After takeoff, a GPS electrical system warning prompted the pilot to return. Approaching the airport, displays failed, flaps would not extend, and the pilot landed with gear retracted, causing substantial fuselage damage.

Event Details

After a normal start and runup, the pilot departed from the airport and climbed to cruise altitude. At that point, he noticed a flashing message on the GPS indicating an electrical system issue. He informed air traffic control of his intention to return to the departure airport for repair. Approximately 7 miles from the airport, the GPS and primary flight display began to flash. The pilot pulled the circuit breakers to those displays and set up for a straight-in approach to the runway. Recognizing the need to lose altitude, he attempted to extend the flaps, but they did not respond. He reset the circuit breakers, but the flaps still would not extend.

Landing Sequence

During the approach, the pilot forgot to extend the landing gear, resulting in a landing with the gear retracted. The fuselage sustained substantial damage during this event.

Post-Accident Findings

After the accident, the pilot realized he had been interrupted during his starting checklist and concluded that he had not turned on the alternators (alternator and standby alternator) during the start procedures. As a result, the airplane's avionics were powered solely by the battery for the entire flight, leading to the loss of electrical power.
