What happened
On 14 April 2022, at approximately 18:30 LMT, an AutoGyro Cavalon gyroplane, registration SP-XCWA, was performing a recreational takeoff from Wałczyk Airfield. After completing pre-flight checks and engine warm-up, the pilot initiated the takeoff run.
As the aircraft accelerated, it began to deviate from the runway centerline. By the time the aircraft reached 87 km/h, it had moved toward the left edge of the runway. At approximately 250 meters into the takeoff roll, the aircraft was 3 meters outside the left edge of the runway, traveling at 110 km/h. Upon liftoff at roughly 275 meters, the gyroplane rolled to the left and bounced, causing the nose landing gear to detach from the fuselage. The aircraft subsequently struck a copse of trees, overturned, and came to rest in a water-filled depression. The pilot sustained minor injuries and was able to exit the cockpit unaided.
The investigation
The PKBWL investigation examined the aircraft's maintenance records, the pilot's credentials, and the meteorological conditions at the time of the accident. The sequence of events was reconstructed using footage from an onboard camera. The investigation confirmed that the aircraft was properly maintained, the engine parameters were correct, and the weight and balance were within limits. The pilot was found to be rested and not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The weather conditions were determined to be excellent (CAVOK) and had no impact on the accident.
Findings
- The primary cause of the accident was a flying error involving the incorrect setting of the control stick during the takeoff run and a failure to maintain the aircraft's direction on the runway.
- The pilot's limited flight experience, having held the necessary license for less than ten months, acted as a contributing factor to the loss of control.
