Accident Overview
On May 29, 2023, at about 1330 central daylight time, a Bellanca 8KCAB airplane, registration N5038E, sustained substantial damage in an accident near Larchwood, Iowa. The aircraft was operated as a personal flight under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91.
Injuries and Damage
The pilot sustained serious injuries, while the passenger received minor injuries. The airplane came to rest approximately 700 feet to the left of the departure end of the paved taxiway. Both wings and the front fuselage experienced substantial damage. Impact damage and low-energy signatures were consistent with a stall.
Pilot and Passenger Statements
During the investigation, the pilot reported no memory of the accident. The passenger recalled a vague memory, stating that he felt a roller-coaster-like sensation during the climb out. He noted that the airplane pitched up higher than normal before appearing to stall. The passenger also recalled hearing the pilot say they were stalling. The pilot submitted a statement on NTSB Form 6120 indicating no mechanical malfunctions or failures.
Aircraft Examination
Post-accident examination of the airframe revealed flight control continuity from the cockpit to the rudder, ailerons, elevator, and elevator trim surfaces, with interruptions attributed to impact damage. The engine showed continuity throughout the drivetrain, and thumb compression was verified on all valves and cylinders. Fuel was present in the fuel lines and carburetor bowl, though the fuel tanks were breached, with leakage noted by first responders. No pre-impact anomalies were found with the airframe, fuel system, flight controls, or engine.
