Accident Details

On June 16, 2023, at approximately 0945 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-22-150, registered as N3662Z, was substantially damaged during an accident near Indian Trail, North Carolina. The private pilot, who was the sole occupant, sustained minor injuries. The flight was conducted under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight.

Pilot Account

According to the pilot, after landing about halfway down the 2,350-foot-long runway, he applied the brakes but they did not respond, preventing him from slowing the airplane. To avoid going down a hill at the end of the runway, the pilot applied full left rudder and aileron. The left wing subsequently struck the ground, causing the airplane to nose over and come to rest inverted.

Aircraft Damage

Examination by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspectors revealed substantial damage to both wings. The left wing strut was bent, and the outboard portion of the right wing was also damaged. The airplane came to rest inverted.

Brake System Examination

The brake system appeared visually intact and contained hydraulic fluid. However, during a functional test, the airplane could roll without much resistance. A follow-up examination of the brake system could not be completed due to the disposition of the wreckage. Approximately one month after the accident, the pilot informed the inspector that the O-rings were bad; however, the inspector's examination had not revealed any evidence of brake fluid leakage.
