What happened
On August 3, 2024, at approximately 11:25 EDT, an experimental, amateur-built Glasair 3, registration N121CH, was involved in an accident near Oxford, Maine. The aircraft was being operated under 14 CFR Part 91 for the purpose of a phase 1 test flight, specifically to evaluate takeoff and landing performance.
After performing standard engine run-up and ground operations, the pilot departed from Oxford County Regional Airport (81B). The flight included multiple takeoff and landing maneuvers at both Oxford County Regional Airport and Auburn/Lewiston Municipal Airport (LEW).
While flying the downwind leg of the traffic pattern at 81B, the pilot experienced engine roughness after reducing power to 25 inches of manifold pressure. The pilot attempted to troubleshoot the issue by adjusting the fuel selector and the ignition switches. After returning the magnetos to the BOTH position, the engine suffered a total loss of power. The pilot then executed a forced landing, clearing trees by extending the wing flaps. The aircraft touched down on a perimeter road, struck a fence, and came to a stop in a grassy area near the departure end of runway 33.
The pilot sustained one serious injury.
