On December 10, 2024, a Vans RV-8 (N42CS) experienced a total loss of engine power after takeoff from Smithville Crawford Municipal Airport, leading to an aerodynamic stall and impact. The pilot was seriously injured. Subsequent engine testing could not replicate the failure.

Accident Overview

On December 10, 2024, at approximately 1130 central standard time, a Vans RV-8, registration N42CS, was substantially damaged when it impacted terrain near Smithville, Texas. The pilot, who was the sole occupant, sustained serious injuries. The flight was conducted under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight.

Flight Details

According to the pilot, the accident flight was the second flight of the day. Earlier that morning, he had flown from San Marcos Airport (KHYI) in San Marcos, Texas, to Smithville Crawford Municipal Airport (84R) in Smithville, Texas. Before departing from 84R, both fuel tanks were topped off. After takeoff from runway 84R, the engine began to cut out and lose power. When the airplane reached an altitude of about 100 to 150 feet above ground level, the engine experienced a total loss of power. The airplane was in a left bank at the time; the pilot rolled the wings level, but the airplane entered an aerodynamic stall before descending and striking terrain approximately 1,000 feet north of the departure end of the runway.

Post-Accident Examination

The wreckage was recovered to a salvage facility for further examination. On March 7, 2025, an engine run test was conducted. The engine started and operated without any problems, producing rated power. Notably, the engine continued to run with the ignition switch in the "off" position. Examination revealed that the switch connection's ground was intermittent and appeared to be in a condition that would have allowed continued operation of the magnetos. However, disassembly of the switch did not identify any anomalies. The loss of engine power experienced during the accident could not be replicated during testing.
