What happened
On March 6, 2025, at approximately 13:50 local time, a Tercel gyroplane, registration SP-XXAX, was performing a series of training circuits at an unregistered landing site in Baranów. During the initial climb phase following takeoff, the instructor pilot heard an unidentified noise; however, as engine parameters appeared normal, the climb was continued.
After completing the first turn and reaching a downwind position, the aircraft experienced a loss of engine power. The instructor initiated an immediate landing procedure, performing a 18ł0-degree turn while descending. After the aircraft came to a stop on the grass surface, a fire broke out. The instructor ordered the student pilot to evacuate the cabin. The student pilot sustained no injuries, but the instructor suffered light injuries from burns. The aircraft was completely destroyed by the fire.
The investigation
The PKBWL investigation team has collected statements from the crew and witnesses, reviewed the flight school's documentation, and examined the aircraft's records. Surveillance footage from the landing site was also secured. Investigators performed an inspection of the engine, which was not entirely consumed by the fire, and have decided to examine it further to determine the cause of the power loss.
Findings
Preliminary analysis suggests that the fire was likely caused by a fuel system leak following the landing, which led to ignition. The investigation has noted existing issues regarding the fuel system as highlighted in a manufacturer bulletin.
