What happened
On February 7, 2025, a Vulcanair V1.0, registration N186DS, was involved in an accident near Cheswold, Delaware. The aircraft was being operated by the Delaware State University Aviation Program as a Part 91 instructional flight, intended to help a private pilot gain experience toward a commercial pilot certificate.
According to flight data, the aircraft departed Delaware Airpark (33N) at 09:06 and arrived at Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) at 12:45. Following a refueling stop at MYR, the aircraft departed for a return flight that included touch-and-go landings at Ocean City Municipal Airport and Delaware Coastal Airport (GED).
While approaching Delaware Airpark (33N) for the final landing, the pilot maneuvered into the right base for runway 09 and descended to 1,000 feet MSL. During the short final approach, approximately 2 miles from the runway, the pilot attempted to adjust the glideslope by increasing engine power. The pilot reported that the power increased for approximately two seconds before the engine suffered a complete loss of power.
Unable to reach the runway, the pilot performed a forced landing in a grassy area just before the approach end of the runway. Upon touchdown, the aircraft nosed over, causing substantial damage to the left wing, rudder, and vertical stabilizer. The pilot and the pilot-rated passenger were not injured; however, there were 2 minor injuries recorded.
The investigation
The wreckage was retained for examination.
